Washington – Last night the President vetoed S.J. Res 22, a “Resolution of Disapproval” under the Congressional Review Act to repeal the Clean Water Rule, the Administration’s landmark initiative to restore critical Clean Water Act protections to our nation’s streams, wetlands and other water bodies.
Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released this statement:
“President Obama understands that it’s time to protect clean water. It’s sad that so many in Congress don’t get it. The commonsense restoration of clear safeguards to vital streams and wetlands was long overdue and much needed. Despite the deeply partisan attacks on these scientifically sound policies to protect the drinking water for more than 117 million Americans the President never wavered from supporting these needed protections.
The President didn’t need a poll to tell him that Americans care about clean water – action to protect clean water was a priority for his administration from the start- but poll after poll has shown that vast majorities of people strongly support safeguards for streams and wetlands. Americans are sick and tired of the polluter powered agenda that persists in Congress and I know that they join me and the more than one-million Clean Water Action members in thanking President Obama for protecting clean water.”
