WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, President Obama issued a veto of S.J. Res 22 — a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act of the Environmental Protection Agency’s recently finalized Clean Water Rule.

In response, Earthjustice Vice President of Policy and Legislation, Marty Hayden issued the following statement:

“Earthjustice applauds President Obama for standing up to big polluters and reaffirming his commitment to protect clean water for millions of Americans across this country. According to the EPA, the Clean Water rule ensures that the drinking water sources for 1 in 3 Americans is protected, and as recent crises have demonstrated — our water sources are in dire need of stronger protections.”

“It is profoundly disappointing that Congress would oppose these safeguards at all, much less send the President extreme measures like this resolution. Congress should be strengthening protections for the clean water our families depend on instead of pandering to the biggest water polluters in the land.
