Washington, D.C. — Today Congress finalized a $1.3 trillion bill that will fund the government through September 2018. The appropriations bill rejects the deep cuts to EPA funding that President Trump had proposed. Congress also rejected most of the reckless policy riders that had been proposed, like the amendment that would have allowed Scott Pruitt’s EPA to ignore the rule of law to repeal the 2015 Clean Water Rule.
Clean Water Action National Campaigns Director Lynn Thorp released the following statement:
“For once this Congress listened to the public and said ‘No’ to President Trump. Trump’s budget proposal was an attack on our water, public health, and communities throughout the country. This will ensure that EPA can continue to partner with states to safeguard drinking water and other vital water resources.
We applaud the hard work of our champions in Congress who fought to secure funding and protections for our water and health. This is a testament to the power of the public ─ Americans demanded that Congress put our priorities first, not polluter profits. As Congress considers spending bills for 2019 and beyond, Congressional leadership would do well to remember that Americans will hold Congress accountable if they let corporate polluters and other special interests who fund their campaigns call the shots again.
